An engineering lab report serves one main purpose: to document what you did, what you found, and what it means. Your reader—whether a lecturer, supervisor, or colleague—should understand your experiment without having to guess your methods or assumptions. Start by knowing your audience and the specific requirements your course or workplace has set. Most lab reports follow a standard structure: title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and conclusions. Check your assignment sheet or lab manual first, as some instructors may want sections in a different order or with different emphasis.

The introduction should explain the 'why' behind your experiment. Start with background information that helps readers understand the topic, then narrow down to your specific research question or objective. State clearly what you aimed to find or test. Keep this section focused—avoid rambling into unrelated theory. The methods section is your 'how-to' guide: describe your equipment, procedures, and any relevant parameters (temperatures, pressures, time intervals) in enough detail that someone could repeat your work. Write in past tense and in a logical sequence. Don't include every tiny detail, but do include anything that affects your results.

When presenting results, let the data speak without interpretation. Use tables, graphs, and figures to show your findings, and refer to them clearly in your text. Write 'Figure 1 shows...' rather than forcing readers to hunt for what you mean. Keep the results section factual and objective—this is not the place for your opinion or explanation. Make sure all graphs have labelled axes with units, legends where needed, and captions that explain what is shown. In the discussion section, you interpret what your results mean. Compare them to expected outcomes or theory, explain any unexpected findings, discuss limitations of your experiment, and suggest how future work could improve on what you did.

Clear writing matters as much as clear thinking. Use simple, direct sentences and active voice where possible ('we measured the temperature' rather than 'the temperature was measured'). Define technical terms the first time you use them, even if they seem obvious to you. Avoid jargon unless it is standard in your field and necessary. Read your report aloud to catch awkward phrasing, and proofread for spelling and grammar—these small errors damage your credibility. Keep paragraphs short and focused; a new idea usually calls for a new paragraph.

Pay attention to formatting conventions. Use consistent notation for units, equations, and symbols throughout. Number all figures and tables, and refer to them by number in your text. Include a title that is specific and informative. Some reports call for an abstract (a brief summary of the whole report, usually 100–200 words); check your requirements. At the end, list any sources you consulted, using the citation style your course requires. Finally, leave time to revise. Your first draft rarely reads as clearly as you think it does—stepping away and coming back with fresh eyes will help you spot confusing passages and improve your explanations.

Remember that a lab report is not just a record for yourself; it is a communication tool. Approach it as if you are explaining your work to someone who was not there and has not done the experiment. Be honest about what went well and what did not; acknowledging limitations shows thoughtfulness, not weakness. With practice, clear report writing becomes faster and more natural, and you will find that the discipline of writing well also sharpens your understanding of your own experimental work.
