An engineering lab report documents what you did in an experiment, what you found, and what it means. The purpose is to communicate your work clearly so that someone else could understand your methods and verify your results. Start by understanding your audience—usually your instructor or peers—and write with them in mind. Use plain, direct language and avoid unnecessary jargon. If you must use technical terms, define them the first time you use them. Structure is your strongest ally: a reader should be able to follow your thinking without hunting for information.

Follow the standard lab report format: Title and date, Introduction (context and objectives), Methods (what you did, step by step), Results (what you observed and measured), Discussion (what your results mean), and Conclusions (summary and broader implications). The Introduction explains the 'why'—the theory, background, and specific questions you were investigating. The Methods section must be detailed enough that someone could repeat your experiment; include equipment, procedure, and any variations from the standard protocol. Keep these sections factual and clear; save interpretation for the Discussion.

When presenting Results, distinguish between raw data and analysis. Use tables and graphs to display numerical findings, but always refer to them in your text—never assume a reader will look at a figure without guidance. Label all axes, include units, and give each table and figure a clear caption. In the Discussion, explain what your results mean and how they relate to the theory from your Introduction. Address unexpected findings honestly and suggest possible causes. Compare your experimental results to theoretical predictions and discuss sources of error or uncertainty. Avoid making excuses; instead, explain what limitations or uncertainties existed.

Pay attention to writing quality and formatting. Use consistent tense (past tense for what you did and found, present tense for established facts). Write in active voice when possible—'we measured the voltage' rather than 'the voltage was measured.' Check for spelling and grammar mistakes, which undermine your credibility even if your data is solid. Use a consistent font and font size, set reasonable margins, and number your pages. Include a page with all references if you cited sources, formatted according to your instructor's requirements.

Before submitting, reread your report from a fresh perspective. Ask yourself: Can a reader understand what question you were answering? Could they follow your procedure? Do my results clearly show what I found? Have I explained why the results matter? Does every figure and table serve a purpose, or is something just taking up space? A final check for clarity, organization, and completeness will significantly improve your grade and, more importantly, ensure your work genuinely communicates your engineering thinking to others.
