Start by understanding the purpose of a lab report: it is not just a record of what you did, but a communication tool that shows your thinking, method, and conclusions to your instructor, peers, or future readers. Before you begin writing, review the specific requirements your course or organisation has provided—different fields and institutions may emphasise different sections. Generally, however, most engineering lab reports follow a standard structure: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Method (or Procedure), Results, Discussion, and Conclusion, with References at the end. Knowing this structure helps you organise your thoughts as you write.

The Introduction should explain why the experiment matters and what you aimed to find out. Begin with relevant background information—what principle or problem does this lab address?—then clearly state your objective or research question. Keep this section concise; it should answer 'Why are we doing this?' and 'What did we want to learn?' without being unnecessarily long. The Method section is your detailed recipe: describe what equipment you used, how you set it up, and the exact steps you followed. Write this in enough detail that someone else could repeat your experiment. Use past tense and avoid narrative style; focus on facts and procedure rather than your personal experience.

In the Results section, present your data clearly without interpretation. Use tables, graphs, and diagrams to show your findings, and always label axes, units, and sources clearly. Write a brief text summary of what the data shows—for example, 'Temperature increased from 25 °C to 45 °C over five minutes'—but save your analysis for the Discussion. This separation is important: Results is 'what we found', and Discussion is 'what it means'. In the Discussion, explain whether your results matched your expectations, identify sources of error (such as measurement uncertainty or equipment limitations), and explore what your findings tell you about the underlying engineering principle. Be honest about limitations rather than trying to hide them.

Your Conclusion should summarise the key findings and state whether your objective was met. Avoid introducing new data or arguments here; instead, tie your results back to your original research question. If your findings were unexpected, briefly explain what you learned. Keep language direct and avoid over-claiming; say what the evidence actually supports. Throughout your entire report, use clear, straightforward English: write in active or passive voice consistently, define technical terms on first use, and break long sentences into shorter ones if they become hard to follow.

Before submitting, proofread your report carefully. Check that all figures and tables are numbered and captioned, that all references are formatted consistently, and that headings are clear and consistent. Have someone else read it if possible—a peer can often spot confusing sentences that you have become blind to. Remember that clarity serves your reader and reflects your understanding; a well-written lab report is not just a tick-box exercise, but evidence that you can think, experiment, and communicate like an engineer.
