By the end of the introduction, readers should understand what you set out to do and why it matters. A short paragraph or two is usually enough; save detailed theory for textbooks unless your report explicitly asks for it.
The methods section is your experimental recipe. Describe the equipment you used, the procedure you followed, and any relevant conditions (temperature, pressure, sample size, etc.). Write in past tense and be specific enough that someone could replicate your work. Include diagrams or photos if they help, especially for non-standard setups. Do not include results or discussion here—just the 'how' of what you did. If you used a standard procedure from a textbook or manual, you can reference it and note any changes you made.
Present your results clearly using tables, graphs, and text. Organize data logically and choose the format that shows it best: raw data in a table, trends in a graph, and key findings in words. Every figure and table needs a caption that explains what it shows. In your text, point out the important results—do not just repeat the table or describe every data point. Use precise language: write 'the sample broke at 45 newtons' rather than 'it broke pretty easily.' Keep emotion and interpretation out of this section; that belongs in the discussion.
The discussion is where you analyze what your results mean. Compare your findings to theory, expected values, or prior work. Explain any unexpected results or sources of error—was your technique uncertain? Did equipment malfunction? Acknowledge these honestly rather than ignoring them. Discuss how errors might have affected your conclusions and suggest ways a future experiment could improve. This is also where you connect your work back to the broader engineering problem or application you introduced at the start.
Finish with a concise conclusion that restates your main finding and its relevance. A paragraph or two is usually enough. Finally, check your whole report for clarity: read it aloud, fix awkward phrasing, ensure your figures are labeled, and verify that citations are correct if required. Use consistent formatting, a professional font, and proper grammar and spelling. Remember that your lab report is a record of your scientific thinking—take pride in making it accurate, clear, and easy for others to learn from your work.
