A mechanical engineer's day typically starts with problem-solving. This might mean reviewing a design brief, analysing how a current machine is failing, or brainstorming solutions to make a process more efficient. You'll spend time sketching ideas on paper or in a computer-aided design (CAD) program, translating what's in your head into drawings that can actually be built. Even in the digital age, sketching by hand remains a core skill for quickly exploring possibilities before committing to detailed computer models.
Much of the work involves simulation and calculation. Using specialist software, you'll run virtual tests on your designs—checking whether a beam can bear a certain load, whether a pump will push fluid at the right pressure, or whether a mechanical part will wear out too quickly. This 'testing on screen' saves time and money before anything gets manufactured. You'll also work through calculations by hand or spreadsheet to verify that your assumptions are correct and that the design meets safety standards and performance requirements.
Mechanical engineers regularly visit workshops, factories, or site locations to see projects in progress or troubleshoot problems in real equipment. You might spend an afternoon watching how a machine you designed is actually being used, talking to operators about what works and what doesn't. This hands-on reality check is crucial—theory and real life don't always match, and seeing your work operating under actual conditions teaches you lessons no classroom can provide.
Collaboration is a huge part of the role. You'll attend meetings with colleagues from electrical engineering, software teams, manufacturing, and project management. You'll explain your design choices to people who aren't mechanical engineers, listen to constraints you didn't know about, and adapt your ideas to fit the broader project. Writing clear reports and creating presentations that communicate your thinking is as important as the technical work itself.
The work varies dramatically depending on your employer and sector. In manufacturing, you might design components for mass production or improve assembly processes. In consultancy, you solve one-off challenges for different clients. In maintenance roles, you diagnose why equipment has failed and plan repairs or upgrades. In research and development, you explore entirely new ideas with less pressure to deliver a product immediately. No two days are quite the same, which is why many engineers find the work genuinely interesting over a long career.
Starting out, expect to spend more time learning from others, running detailed calculations, and producing drawings under supervision. As you gain experience, you take on more responsibility for decisions, lead smaller projects, and mentor junior team members. The core skills—clear thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to balance competing demands—remain central throughout your career in mechanical engineering.
