Voyager 1 crossed a crucial boundary in August 2012 when it entered interstellar space, the region between stars where the Sun's solar wind no longer dominates. This wasn't a sudden crossing into a void; rather, instruments detected a change in charged particles and magnetic fields, marking the transition from the heliosphere (the bubble of energy blown out by the Sun) into the true interstellar medium. The spacecraft had already passed all eight planets and was traveling through the Kuiper Belt region—but leaving the Sun's direct influence was an even more significant milestone.

What makes Voyager 1's journey remarkable is its incredible speed and distance. Launched by NASA during the height of the space race, it traveled past Jupiter (1979), Saturn (1980), and then continued outward at about 17 kilometres per second relative to the Sun. Today, more than 46 years after launch, Voyager 1 is roughly 24 billion kilometres away from Earth. Despite this vast distance, its radio signals—traveling at the speed of light—still take about 22 hours to reach us, yet we continue receiving scientific data from its instruments.

The spacecraft carries something uniquely human: the Golden Record, a phonograph record containing sounds and images from Earth, including greetings in 55 languages, music from different cultures, and scientific diagrams. It's humanity's message to any extraterrestrial life that might find it. Voyager 1's battery power is expected to run out around 2025, but by then it will have achieved something no human creation has done before—existing as an eternal ambassador in the space between stars, carrying Earth's story into infinity.
