On 31 August 2026, Smart Africa and Uganda's Ministry of ICT and National Guidance held a national stakeholder workshop in Kampala to assess the country's digital entrepreneurship and innovation landscape. The event brought together regulators, academics, entrepreneurs and innovation hubs to identify priorities for growth. Key areas of focus include advancing Uganda's Startup Bill, strengthening science and technology policy, and improving access to regulatory sandboxes.
The reform push comes at a time of significant mobile growth in Uganda. The country's smartphone base reached roughly 20 million by December 2025, up from 17.6 million six months earlier. Mobile internet subscriptions also grew, reaching 18.5 million active users.
In a related development, a tech hub programme supported by the UN Capital Development Fund awarded refundable grants to six local startups, including Everpesa Technologies and Everlend Agritech, further supporting the country's emerging entrepreneurship ecosystem.
