Kenyan startups raised approximately $126 million in the first half of 2026, representing a 4.1% decline from the previous year's comparable period and the weakest funding performance since early 2021. This places Kenya third for the period, with Egypt leading at $327 million and Nigeria second at $254 million.
The decline marks a sharp reversal from 2025, when Kenya was Africa's top venture capital destination, raising $984 million and capturing nearly a third of the continent's total $3.2 billion in venture funding. Analysts attribute the funding slowdown to increased pressure on founders to demonstrate sustainable business models, following several prominent startup failures.
Despite the funding decline, Nairobi continues to serve as a significant East African hub for fintech, agri-tech, healthtech, and digital commerce startups, indicating the region retains importance in the African startup ecosystem.
