Past papers show you exactly what examiners expect and how they test your knowledge. Unlike textbooks or lecture notes, they reveal the real format, difficulty level, and types of questions you will face. Start by collecting papers from at least the last three to five years if possible. Review the marking schemes and examiner's reports alongside the papers themselves—these documents explain what students commonly get wrong and what distinguishes a good answer from an excellent one. This combination gives you insight into the examiner's mindset, not just the correct answers.

Use your first attempt at a past paper as a diagnostic tool rather than a test of your current knowledge. Set it aside without looking at solutions, work through it under timed conditions (or slightly longer if you are still learning), and then compare your work carefully to the mark scheme. Mark yourself honestly. This reveals which topics or question types cause you difficulty. Do not aim for perfection on your first try—the goal is to identify gaps. Group your mistakes into categories: procedural errors, conceptual misunderstandings, careless mistakes, or time management issues. This categorization guides your next revision steps.

Once you have identified weak areas, go back to your notes and textbooks to fill those gaps before attempting another past paper. Revising actively with a specific purpose is far more effective than passively re-reading material. After a week or two, return to similar question types from different past papers and see if you have improved. Repeat this cycle of practice, identification, learning, and re-practice. You will notice patterns—perhaps you always struggle with free-body diagrams, or circuit analysis, or dimensional analysis. Target these areas relentlessly.

As your revision progresses, increase the difficulty and speed of your work. Early on, take extra time to understand each solution step-by-step. Later, practise working under exam time pressure so you build both accuracy and speed together. If a paper has multiple questions, try tackling them in different orders to find your optimal strategy—some students benefit from starting with familiar topics to build confidence, while others prefer to tackle difficult questions first when their mind is fresh. Experiment and find what works for you.

Never use past papers passively by simply reading solutions. You must write out your working, make mistakes, struggle a little, and learn from the struggle. Keep a revision log noting which papers you have completed, which topics they covered, and what your score was. Over time, this log shows your progress and helps you focus remaining revision time on the weakest areas. Finally, save one or two recent past papers to use as a final mock exam in the week before the real exam, ideally under strict timed conditions and without consulting notes. This gives you an honest measure of your readiness and builds confidence.
