You can also use PDF portfolios or document platforms, but digital platforms allow you to include videos, interactive elements, and live links to code. Keep design clean and functional; employers want to see engineering thinking, not flashy graphics. Make sure your portfolio is mobile-friendly and loads quickly, as recruiters often review applications on phones.
Include evidence of your process, not just final results. A sketch or early design iteration, a calculation sheet, test data, or a photograph of a prototype in progress all add credibility. If a project failed partway through, explaining what went wrong and what you learned is valuable—it shows critical thinking and resilience. Engineers solve problems through iteration; your portfolio should reflect that reality. Employers respect honesty about challenges more than they trust claims of perfection.
Update your portfolio regularly as you complete new projects, even after graduation. Add internship work (with permission), freelance designs, competition entries, or passion projects. Keep descriptions current and accurate, and remove or improve outdated entries. A living portfolio that grows with your career is more powerful than a static snapshot from your final year. Review it before each job application and tailor the projects you highlight to match the role—emphasize structural work for a building design position, electronics for an embedded systems role, and so on.
